Happy Valentine’s Day!

Linda: It’s February 1st, so Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. How did you and Bob used to celebrate Valentine's Day?

Mary Beth: Well, you know, it depended. When we were “young and in love” it was great. Then when we had kids, it became a lot about buying Valentines for the for their teachers and for their classmates and getting those all prepared.  But we always tried to get away for dinner or do something special and have a romantic time. Sometimes it was great and sometimes it wasn't the greatest, because—I thanks to Hallmark and everything else—my expectations were pretty high for a romantic time. Sometimes it was, sometimes it wasn't, but, still, the important thing was that we were together.

Linda: Kirby used to take me out for dinner before Valentine's Day because he didn't like crowds in the restaurant. He didn't like to wait for a long time, so that was fun. But that all changed in 2013 when Kirby passed away, and Bob in 2019, so we are no longer involved with husbands.

However, Valentine's Day is about love, so I had to learn to redefine Valentine's Day. The Bible says in 1 John 4:7-8 that God IS love. So, if God is love, and I love you and you love me, we can still enjoy Valentine's Day when we celebrate the love that is in our lives. Instead of receiving, we can concentrate on giving. It truly can be a day when we reach out.

I hope that you have a great Valentine's Day. Make it the best one you can, and you'll be glad you did.
