Up to Something Good
By Nancy Honeytree
When I wrote the song “Up To Something Good,” I was doing the dishes and feeling a little bored and lonely. I asked the Lord for something to help me get through the dishes. I had no idea that this same little song would help me cope with the loss of my infant son and my husband.
It was the fall of 1993 when I musically paraphrased Romans 8:28, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” (NASB)
“I’m gonna believe that You are up to something good. When I can’t understand the things that happen in my life, I’m gonna believe that You are up to something good.”
My husband J.R. Miller and I hosted missionary guests, Ruth and Victor Martinez. When Ruth and Victor heard my new song, they translated it into Spanish and took it with them to Mexico, where it became a favorite worship song!
A year after I wrote the song, it became a personal lifeline for me when we received a diagnosis of Trisomy 18 for our unborn son. My husband J.R. and I held onto the hope that God would work all things together for good in our lives and for our baby. We prayed for a miraculous healing for our son. We also surrendered ourselves to the sovereign plan of God.
We experienced the power of the prayers of many people who loved us and walked along with us through this trial. We felt the amazing peace of God’s presence as our infant son went to be with the Lord two hours after he was born.
Three months after the loss of our son, we experienced the miraculous joy of being able to adopt a baby boy. I even had the privilege of breastfeeding our adopted son! God intricately worked the timing of all things together to bring something very good into our lives—a God-sent boy for us to adopt and raise together!
J.R. and I loved to sing “Up to Something Good” together in English and Spanish. We loved to tell people everywhere the story of how God used the song to bring us through a great loss. Telling the story also helped bring healing to us in our grief.
As the years went by, J.R. and I traveled together to many Latin American countries on mission trips. We had many opportunities to share this song. “Up to Something Good” is simple, easy to learn, and power packed with truth from the Word of God. We heard countless testimonies of how the Lord used our song in people’s lives to help them in their times of trial. Praise God!
When J.R. went to be with the Lord in May of 2018, once again the Lord used “Up to Something Good” in my own life. Becoming a widow is undoubtedly the greatest emotional challenge I have ever faced. Thankfully there is a simple little tune that keeps on reminding me to hang onto Romans 8:28. No matter what challenges I experience, I can be assured that God is up to something good!
